Summary and aim of role:
To ensure adequate and appropriate garden maintenance, for The Cowdray Estate.
Cowdray Gardens, Birthday House, Benbow Holiday Cottages, and Capron House.
To maintain the gardens and grounds as above, in line with the Cowdray Estate policies, to the highest possible condition, working amongst a team of gardeners.
To help with the constant maintenance, development and improvement of The Estate Gardens.
In terms of practical horticulture, the garden maintenance of shrubs, herbaceous, bog and pond plants, half hardies, annuals, bulbs, fruits and vegetables, turf care, pest/disease/weed control, composting and soil improvement, hard landscaping and path care, glasshouse care, plant propagation, arboriculture works.
Including the following works: Landscaping, propagation, planting and lawn irrigation, weeding, grass cutting, strimming & brush-cutting, general garden and facilities maintenance.
Attend training programmes, delivered for The Cowdray Estate.
Be aware, adhere to and commit to all Cowdray Estate Health and Safety Policies, standards and requirements to follow the Estate environmental policies with respect to sustainable gardening activities, including energy, water, peat and pesticide use. Ensuring that all garden activities are carried out in line with these policies for the protection of the workforce and general public. To report any hazards or accidents to appropriate personnel. Ensure all tasks are carried out in a safe and controlled manner.
To carry out all other reasonable instructions and projects emanating from the Head Gardener as your line manager, in your role as Estate Gardener, assist in Event management activities involved across all estate departments.
To use correct machinery and plant items for each specific task they are designed for.
Ensure safe storage of all flammable liquids in line with COSHH regulations, that all fuels and oils are only used in correctly specified areas in line with the Estates COSHH regulations.
Keep all areas clear from weed and leaf debris and fork over manage regularly and to keep to our highest standards as required throughout the Estate.
Water and irrigate all garden areas as necessary.
Lawns and verges are to be kept mown to Head Gardeners schedules and instructions.
Report any dangerous branches, dead or leaning trees, dangerous or un-serviceable machinery and plant items. To prevent possible danger to colleagues, staff or guests.
Assist with the departments Health & Safety program by performing regular safety checks on all machines and vehicles. Recording and reporting issues as required.
Be aware of the Cowdray Estate Vision and Mission Statement and use these to assist in delivering your daily duties with a positive and progressive attitude.
To be pro-active in your role. Notice where improvements could be made. Make your input count.
Communicate regularly with your line manager, reporting your daily progress, giving and receiving valuable feedback.
Events: Assist in setting up for each event; The gardening team is to assist with – Car parking duties for events – Assist with stewarding & car parking duties as scheduled and programmed in. Including – Polo Events: When works and staff are required to cover and assist in arrangements, for each event.
To assist – Estate Surveyor: With all new projects as requested throughout The Cowdray Estate.
City & Guilds Level 2 in Horticulture or equivalent – Essential.
CS30 Chainsaw maintenance & cross cutting (NPTC 201/202 equivalent) – Preferred.
Pa1/Pa6a Pesticides application – Desirable.
Full UK Driving Licence – Essential.
Experience with Garden machinery, tractors, ATV, and towing, etc. – Desirable.
This performance role guide is not exhaustive, nor is it meant to be. Additional items may be introduced where necessary as the gardens and Estate develops.
Base – Cowdray Gardens
Vehicle & Machinery – Cowdray Gardens Plant and Machinery.
Days – 5 days/week.
Hours – 7.30am – 5.00pm. @ 9 hours per day, 45 hours per week. (40 working hours)
