Senior Technical Underwriter
Senior Technical Underwriter: An exciting opportunity has arisen at Ageas Head Office in Eastleigh for a Senior Technical Underwriter to manage and improve the performance and profitable development of the Ageas products through development, application and control of: o Product and policy covers; o Technical documentation, including policy wordings; o Underwriting rules and technical processes.
The Technical Underwriting team is part of the Underwriting directorate. It consists of approximately 12 people .The Senior Technical Underwriter will have between 3-5 direct reports and maintain and develop key relationships within all departments including IT and Test, Central Change Team, Scheme Underwriting, Claims and Risk.
The team use their technical expertise and skills to contribute to the success of our business through the cost effective design of our products and the efficiency of our processes, whilst ensuring we continue to remain compliant with all relevant legislation and regulation. The team operates in a high pressure environment with many projects and tasks being handled at once so it is important that work is well organised and prioritised. The Senior Technical Underwriter will work closely with many different areas of the business and departments. They will be given responsibility for the accurate and timely delivery of specific projects and rate updates, and will also be expected to coach their team to deliver their own projects.
The Senior Technical Underwriter is expected to contribute to creating a working environment to enable the Technical Underwriting team to provide a high level of service to its customers.
Main Responsibilities of Senior Technical Underwriter: Contribute to the profitable development of the Ageas products . Control the financial and reputational risk and impact on profitability . Control underwriting authorities within Ageas and ensure appropriate use. Control the Technical Underwriting team and establish appropriate processes. Manage internal and external relationships and mmaintain a professional and ethical level of conduct. To support the Technical Underwriting Manager and Underwriting Service Department Management, as appropriate. To control financial and reputational risk and impact on profitability through ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and regulation. To control Underwriting authorities and ensure that these are correctly used. To liaise with key internal departments to agree work priorities. To ensure that adequate resource is available for planned activities or properly re-allocated for emerging work. To provide mentor/coaching guidance to the Technical Underwriting team and ensure adequate professional development takes place amongst all team members. To support the Technical Underwriting Manager and Underwriting department management with the delivery of profitable growth across all channels by supporting the delivery of BAU, Simple Change and Strategic Change, ensuring accuracy and efficiency and delivering to agreed timescales and prioritised in line with AIL Strategy. Skills and Experience needed:
Numerical: The jobholder requires a good degree of numeracy with a strong ability to analyse and interpret complex data.
Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills are required. Excellent skills in explaining, both internally and externally to key business partners, the interpretation of policy wordings, underwriting and pricing decisions and the outcome of audits. Excellent skills in explaining technical knowledge/issues to non-technical people.
Work Related: Good negotiation skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel to intermediate level. Organised and thorough, with good project management skills. Good risk evaluation skills. Proactive, innovative, self-motivating and largely self-reliant, with a desire to learn. A team player; participating with other team members and contributing constructively. Confident decision maker who exhibits a willingness to take responsibility. Able to prioritise work to meet deadlines. Good problem solving ability.
Human Relations: Have strong management, interpersonal and people management skills. Able to build and sustain effective relationships with multiple stakeholders at all levels, both internally and externally. Motivational, leadership and influencing skills. Excellent skills in managing, motivating and developing a team.
Essential Knowledge: An excellent understanding of underwriting and pricing principles and experience of a wide range of technical issues, including the construction of policy wordings. A good working knowledge of the insurance market and of current legal/industry developments affecting the market. An understanding of the software house market and the way insurance products are developed on their systems. Experience of project work is essential.
Essential qualifications: Educated to high level, ideally a degree holder, or have had the same level of directly relevant work experience. Experience in a Head Office environment in an underwriting and/or pricing role is essential. Previous experience of product development within the insurance market, assessing/developing new opportunities with key accounts/schemes as well as managing the performance of existing schemes. CII Diploma or similar level of technical insurance qualification or actively working towards it.
