University Hospital Southampton, is a large teaching hospital located on the south coast of England. The Paediatric Intensive care Unit , serving the needs of critically ill children across the south of England and all paediatric sub-specialities in the UHS, is looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, flexible and highly motivated consultant to join the current team of 9 consultants in developing the PIC service provided.
The successful applicant will complete a team of 10 paediatric intensivists providing a comprehensive tertiary service for all sub-specialities for the geographical area covering the Wessex Region – with a total population of approx 3.5 million. In addition, a General Paediatric Service is provided for Southampton Health District (population 700,000) and Congenital Cardiac Surgical service (further 2 million people) in the Thames Valley area. The regional Paediatric Intensive Care retrieval service is delivered from UHS in collaboration with Oxford University Hospital. UHS PICU has consistently one of the lowest SMRs and the highest throughout per bed of any PICU in Britain. The purpose built Unit has 14 bed spaces and 2 cubicles with adjacent family support facilities (that include 6 en-suite parent rooms and a children’s play area).
On site provision is delivered up to 19.30hrs and overnight consultants are on call on a 1 in 8 basis
The successful applicant will
be First onconsultant, leading the ward round and in general charge of the UnitorSecond onconsultant with primary responsibility for the retrieval service and critical care outside of the PICU. He/she will also provide on call cover for emergencies on a rota basis.
participate in undergraduate clinical training (including paediatric tutorials, personal educational supervision and projects) and the teaching of postgraduates, nurses and other disciplines as appropriate
have management responsibilities that include appraisal of junior doctors and clinical governance through a series of different meetings (e.g. Monthly consultants meeting; Monthly M&M meeting)
be required to undertake administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the running of clinical departments and travel as necessary between Units.
The successful applicant will have full GMC Registration and MRCPCH/FRCA or equivalent. He/she will
have completed full PICU training approved by ICPICM
have experience in the management of congenital heart disease (including ECMO) and of transporting critically ill children
have good manual dexterity and the ability to perform complex practical procedures
be a good communicator who is adaptable and flexible with good leadership qualities
Please note that GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and right to work in the UK are essential for this role. Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible.
