Research Associate

Job description          

Department The Department of Health Sciences is looking to appoint a Research Fellow with experience in qualitative and quantitative methods and experience of working within a public health related area. In this role you will conduct research under the supervision and mentorship of Professor Tracey Bywater, and under the management of the Better Start Bradford Innovation Hub Programme Manager to support ongoing Better Start Bradford monitoring, evaluation and development work, and current and future development and evaluation work. This is a unique opportunity to be part of an initiative which aims to improve the life chances of some of the poorest families within Bradford. Role Based both in Bradford (2-3 days / week) and York, you will conduct collaborative research projects, duties to include; study protocol development; ethical approval processes, identifying and applying for research funding, field work and facilitation of focus groups/interviews with key stakeholders, data management and analysis, working for the Social Emotional development work stream and across other work streams as appropriate. In addition you will be conducting literature searches and synthesising research evidence; liaising with field sites and staff, investigators and members of the Innovation Hub and Better Start Bradford, attending relevant meetings and developing research agendas based on Better Start Bradford. You will also write up research results and disseminate them through publications, seminar and conference presentations and public engagement and outreach activities as well as contribute to the identification of possible new areas of research. Condition of appointment This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. Consequently, all applicants will be asked to declare both unspent and spent convictions on their application form. Appointment of the successful candidate will be conditional on a Disclosure and Barring Service check. Skills, Experience & Qualification needed First degree in health-related area with qualitative/quantitative training PhD (highly desirable) involving qualitative and quantitative methods Research experience in an area that will complement and enhance the department's research strategy Knowledge in applied health research Knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies Experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research and writing up research work for publication Ability to develop research objectives, projects and proposals for own and joint research Competency with statistical software packages such as STATA / SPSS/NVIVO Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience Competency to present at conferences or exhibit work in appropriate events Commitment to social justice in health and health care For informal enquiries contact Tracey Bywater at tracey.bywater@york.ac.uk The post is fixed term for 1 year and funded by the National Lottery Community Fund (previously the Big Lottery) Interviews will take place on the 18 October 2019 “The University is committed to promoting a diverse and inclusive community – a place where we can all be ourselves and succeed on merit.
