OVERVIEW OF ROLE
The London News Bureau plays a key role in providing the coverage of international news and in supporting overseas field operations. This is a busy environment covering stories 24/7 and therefore a flexible approach, a sense of humour and an interest in international news are essential.
Our Media Desk Associates are experienced Digital Picture Archivists with experience of working with a demanding customer base in a busy broadcast news environment. We work on quick turnaround news packages to tight deadlines. You will demonstrate the ability and the eye for detail to assist producers looking for the best possible content in line with NBC News production values.
Responsible for media management, form acquiring media either automated or manually.
Research video and still pictures from in-house and external sources for stories as requested by news and show producers from the London News Bureau and from other NBC Newsrooms and Bureaus, often under tight time constraints.
Ensure that all video/stills content of archival value is registered and has a route to the digital archive. Collate NBC-generated material from field and studio recordings as well as selecting and archiving agency material from Eurovision, RTV, APTV and other, remaining attentive to any rights and clearance issues. Search a variety of new media sources for new and unusual content and upload appropriate items into NBC server.
Research and license third party video and stills and resolve any rights and clearance issues relating to video and stills, whether from traditional or new media sources, requested for use by production teams.
Maintain the stills and downloads database along with the rest of the team.
Deal with research requests for material and anticipate developing stories so that material is readily available.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Technically competent to ensure content is preserved appropriately, with an awareness of agreed conventions and rights considerations.
Must have very strong IT skills and understand how social networking sites operate. A familiarity with Avid workflow would be advantageous.
Excellent research skills in searching catalogued and un-catalogued archives and the skills to continue the development of the NBC News archive, encompassing both video and stills.
Demonstrates an excellent `picture eye’, a good degree of editorial judgement and attention to detail.
Willingness to work closely with editorial teams filing stories for different platforms by reading scripts and helping solve video challenges.
Team player with strong interpersonal skills and customer-focus approach; able to work collaboratively with a multi skilled team and deal with members of the public and interviewees diplomatically and sensitively.
Demonstrable ability to deliver quality work under pressure and to tight deadlines. Consistently able to maintain high attention to detail, organisation and problem solving skills in challenging environments.
Excellent understanding of the news market and NBC audience dynamics and brings this context to each production. Good general knowledge of local and world current affairs is essential.
Has up to date knowledge of the relevant legislation, regulations, and associated procedures, including Libel and Contempt, Copyright, Data Protection, Public Liability, etc., and how to comply with regulatory requirements.
To train colleagues or freelancers and implement new procedures and systems as and when they arise.
