Principal Clinical Neuropsychologist

Service/Ward/Department Summary:
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified Principal Clinical Neuropsychologist to join the Stroke Team in Oldham, with some time in the psychological medicine service in Oldham. The stroke team enables the accelerated discharge of stroke patients to their home environment, providing specialist neuro-rehabilitation in the community comparable to that of an in-patient stroke unit. This team work closely with other key organisations to ensure a seamless transfer of care from the hospital to home setting. The team focus on timed specific patient goals and embrace the needs and ability of their carers. The service is community based and offers the majority of interventions in patients homes (although some clinic space is available for the psychologist).

The psychological medicine service in Oldham is an innovative team which provides psychology and psychiatry support to people with complex comorbid physical and mental health problems and medically unexplained symptoms. The team works closely with GPs, colleagues from the acute trust and with Pennine MSK Partnership who lead the pain pathway for the borough. The team are also a source of specialist advice and consultation for colleagues in other mental health services.

Role Summary:
This is an excellent opportunity to develop interdisciplinary interventions for patients who are adapting following a stroke, and to provide neuropsychological interventions to patients with long term health conditions and functional symptoms.

As a senior neuropsychologist with substantial senior clinical experience and post-qualification training, the post-holder will provide a high level of specialist expertise with complex and or challenging cases within the stroke service.

Taking a lead role within this small team, the post holder will provide clinical leadership and support informing the care of patients coming through the team. The Principle clinical psychologist/clinical lead will ensure the provision of a quality neuropsychology service to patients identified in the team as having complex co-morbid mental health needs and cognitive difficulties impacting on their quality of life and ability to manage following a neurological event.

A key component of the post will be to provide consultation, support and where appropriate clinical supervision to colleagues from a range of disciplines within the team, and to other psychological therapists providing support to patients open to the team. Where appropriate, the post holder will provide assessment, formulation and therapy to patients. The post holder will also provide management and clinical supervision to an assistant psychologist offering bio-psychosocial assessment and interventions with patients.

Responsibilities of the Post:
The postholder will be responsible in the psychological assessments of adults, applying psychometric and neuropsychological tests, cognitive behavioural assessments, self-report measures, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews.

The postholder will assist in the formulation and delivery of therapeutic interventions including cognitive behavioural therapy and other relevant approaches.

The postholder will additionally develop and lead in the running of therapeutic and wellbeing groups.

Key Requirements of the Person Specification:
The team are looking for a Clinical Psychologist with proven experience of working as a Highly Specialist Psychologist with people with cognitive difficulties in particular experience of working with patients with acquired brain injury or stroke. Formal training in Neuropsychology and the Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology are desirable for this post. Experience of work within a multi-disciplinary team is essential and leading decision making for patient care from a psychological perspective.
