Part-time National Nuclear User Facility Administrator

Job description

This post has been created to support the newly established Management Group for the National Nuclear User Facility, and is funded until the end of March 2023. Working closely with a second administrator post in Lancaster University, the postholder will be responsible for administrative and financial support of all aspects of the NNUF MG role. This will involve interaction with the Principal Investigators of the new NNUF facility grants, with the stakeholders, external project management providers, and with applicants for a new facility access scheme that will be established during the project. There will be opportunities for travel to NNUF partners, and to Idaho National Laboratories in the USA to discuss how to set up the facility access scheme. With an undergraduate degree or equivalent, preferably in a science discipline, you will be able to demonstrate evidence of strong intellectual and analytical skills sufficient to understand the nature of the NNUF project and to build credibility with academics, researchers and sponsors. You should have experience of working in a complex organisation, have demonstrable expertise in financial and/or project management, and have the ability to handle and prioritise a wide portfolio of responsibilities in a challenging environment. The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and excellent presentation skills will be important, as is the willingness to deal sensitively with delivering the outcomes of access funding applications (both successful and unsuccessful). Experience of providing strategic and operational advice on planning and resource allocation, including the presentation and interpretation of complex financial data, will be valuable, as is any previous experience in managing a project website. The National Nuclear User Facility (NNUF) project is a large (£80M) investment in the UK’s nuclear future sponsored by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy to provide state-of-the-art experimental facilities for research and development in nuclear science and technology. NNUF will support 15 – 20 new projects in UK universities and national laboratories, some of them large and complex. A Management Group has been established to oversee the timely and cost effective delivery of these projects, including regular reporting to the project sponsors, and to set up and manage a national access scheme for UK researchers to undertake research on the new facilities as they come on line. £6.5M of funding is available to award in the research support scheme. The Management Group comprises three academic investigators in Oxford, Lancaster and Manchester Universities, supported by two administrative posts in Oxford and Lancaster. This is a part-time post (30 hours/80% FTE). All applications must be made online. You will be required to upload a CV and a supporting statement as part of your application. Please do not attach any manuscripts, papers, transcripts, mark sheets or certificates as these will not be considered as part of your application. The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Monday 21 October 2019. Interviews are scheduled to take place at the Department of Materials in early November and you must be available either by Skype or in person. Please note in normal circumstances only interview travel expenses within the UK will be reimbursed.
